Nice Work, Jessie Mueller! The Tony nominee begins performances as tomboy bootlegger Billie Bendix in the hit Gershwin musical Nice Work If You Can Get It on March 29. Mueller succeeds original star Kelli O’Hara, who played her final performance on March 24. John Treacy Egan and Conrad John Schuck will also join the cast as Chief Berry and Senator Max Evergreen, respectively. Directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall and featuring a book by Joe DiPietro, Nice Work If You Can Get It is currently playing at the Imperial Theatre.
In addition to Mueller, Egan and Schuck, Nice Work If You Can Get It also stars two-time Tony winner Matthew Broderick as Jimmy Winter, two-time Tony winner Judy Kaye as Estonia Dulworth, Tony winner Michael McGrath as Cookie McGee, Tony nominee Jennifer Laura Thompson as Eileen Evergreen, Chris Sullivan as Duke Mahoney and Robyn Hurder as Jeannie Muldoon.
Nice Work tells the story of rich playboy Jimmy Winter (Brockerick), who falls in love with tough bootlegger Billie Bendix (Mueller) on the weekend of his wedding. The musical features a score of classic songs from the Gershwin catalogue, including “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” and of course, “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”
Mueller made her Broadway debut in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, opposite Harry Connick Jr. She earned a Tony nomination for her performance. She appeared opposite O’Hara in the New York Philharmonic concert staging of Carousel at Avery Fisher Hall from February 27 through March 2. Mueller recently finished her run in The Mystery of Edwin Drood when the show closed on March 10 at Studio 54.
